What types of companies do you find most interesting?
I am passionate about companies that are pivotal in addressing global challenges and democratizing their respective industries. My interest gravitates toward firms focused on climate solutions, renewable energy, and industrial innovations that enhance efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, I am keen on companies leveraging AI to promote equality—those developing technologies that ensure fairer resource distribution and improve accessibility in different sectors. Investing in these areas aligns with my vision of supporting ventures that not only promise substantial market growth, but also contribute to meaningful societal progress.
What do you think surprises founders most when they start companies?
I believe what surprises founders the most when starting their companies is the sheer intensity and breadth of challenges they face daily. Many people enter entrepreneurship with a glamorized view of what it means to run a startup, but the reality is more akin to getting hit by a train every day. It’s one of the toughest paths one can choose, especially for first-time entrepreneurs. You find yourself constantly wearing multiple hats—managing, problem-solving, strategizing, and pivoting when necessary. This can be overwhelming, but also immensely rewarding. Understanding this early on is crucial, as it prepares you for the resilience and adaptability required to succeed.
Which mentor has influenced your work the most?
The mentors who have influenced my work the most are my sisters. Although we have never worked together professionally, their strong work ethic and resilience in facing tough life challenges have deeply inspired me. Observing their determination and how they handle adversity with grace has set a powerful example for me, fueling my own desire to constantly grow and strive for excellence in my career. Additionally, I deeply admire Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her relentless work for women's equality. Her legacy is a continual source of motivation for me, reinforcing the importance of perseverance and justice in both my personal and professional life.
Five things you couldn’t live without?
1. My family and friends are my cornerstone; they're not just my biggest support system but also my greatest source of inspiration. This is especially true for my husband and daughter, who are constant presences in my life, offering unwavering support and love.
2. Water is a simple necessity for me—I always carry a bottle to stay hydrated and focused throughout my busy days.
3. The Internet is indispensable; it powers my ability to work, stay informed, connect with others, and unwind.
4. Music and live shows provide a cultural escape and a source of deep joy. Living in Chicago, I am extremely fortunate to have access to world-class plays and vibrant music scenes.
5. Finally, Italy holds a special place in my heart. Although I'm originally from Kazakhstan, Italy has become my sanctuary, a place where I feel immense joy and peace.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It's a timeless exploration of friendship, love, and the human condition, wrapped in a beautifully simple yet profound narrative. One phrase from the book that resonates deeply with me is, 'You are forever responsible for what you have tamed.' This line has shaped my understanding of responsibility and relationships, reminding me of the lasting impact and commitment involved in every meaningful connection I forge.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I've ever received is that there is no success without failure. It taught me to be open-minded, stay engaged, and keep my eyes on the prize, all while enjoying the journey. This balance has been crucial for navigating challenges and fostering personal growth.
